If you are on fire, please call us!\u201d Email, especially boomerang emails, can suck you in and ruin your whole day.\u00a0<strong>There are no such things as accounting emergencies- only poor planning.<\/strong>\u00a0When\u2019s the last time you emailed your doctor or dentist or hair stylist? During the summer, we are remote on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays (with the tax team off on Fridays). Outside of summer (aka tax season), we are remote on Mondays and Fridays. This ensures when we are together in the office, we are all together. Good for potlucks and after work drinks, but especially good for spurious collaboration and quickie decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>As a firm, we are closed from April\u2019s filing day until the first Monday in May. We are also closed for the week following October\u2019s filing deadline. Thanksgiving week is light duty on Monday and Tuesday, with rest of the week off. July 4 week is similar (depending on how it lays out) but the week is usually light duty. We have several late starts (after Superbowl and July 4), and we have several days off just because. We don\u2019t need to see butts in seats to see value and contribution. (a lot of us stand anyway)<\/p>\n<p>We disengage from bad engagements frequently. We pay little attention to the billings, but we are sensitive to the fiscally irresponsible client, the tax scammer and the mean person. We want collaborative relationships, otherwise you can add CPA to your shopping list. Then in May, we all get together as a team, with remote managers and directors flying in, and go through what we did right, and what things we should forget (and never do again). It is a great exercise in being a better firm and better team. Same thing for Thanksgiving (the TDL)\u2026 this is combined with our \u201cslash week\u201d where we review the TDL \/ do some annual training \/ tax kickoff \/ have our holiday dinner. Since our client base is mobile or at least outside of Colorado, our team can be anywhere! As a result, we have a great nucleus of protons and neutrons in Colorado Springs to provide the backbone of a solid in-person team environment, and then we have a bunch of orbiting electrons. We only take on the work we know we can do, and as such we don\u2019t need billable hours. Additionally, we assess each team member on their output, not their input. And! Not all output is the same\u2026 so many people add value to an operation who don\u2019t have a specific deliverable.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get us wrong, however- We have metrics. We have goals. We still must perform and as such we need to monitor operations to ensure success and a great client experience. We must all cross the finish line together. If only most of us cross the finish line, then we fail\u2026 we all must cross it, together, as a team. To that end, workloads are continuously monitored and balanced.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Time_Tracking\"><\/span>Time Tracking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While we don\u2019t have charge hours, we track time for certain activities- tax return preparation, tax planning and accounting services. For tax related stuff, we track time simply to understand what went into the tax return. It is not monitored too severely- more inquisitive as needed than quantitative. For accounting services, we track time for scope creep analysis. Having said, new WCGers must track time in 0.25 increments for the first several weeks to identify time traps and other issues (see Work Life Balance below, like way below).<\/p>\n<p>We mentioned this here and there throughout this page, and we&#8217;ll say it here as well- we only care about hours when you are not getting your work completed or clients \/ team members complain or both. The math is easy- output only comes from input.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Collaborative\"><\/span>Collaborative<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The review process, whether it is tax return preparation and financial statement delivery, is a collaborative process. Our tax return reviews are not met with \u201clet\u2019s see what is wrong.\u201d Rather, fixing small mistakes and making adjustments is part of the tax return preparation process. That is our entire WCG philosophy. Sure, it is a bit simplistic, but it provides an idea of the workload, and how you can advance your career within the WCG Tax Team.<\/p>\n<p>What the heck does \u201cin-training\u201d mean on the tax team path? Good question, and a common one. Regardless of your experience levels, your first 6 months (generally the regular tax season) will be primarily tax return preparation. Sure, you might have reviewed a kazillion tax returns with your last team, but we need you to learn how we make the sandwich. Are we a pickles on top sort of team? Do we cut a sandwich, and if so, which way? Of course, onions go on the bottom; everyone knows that.<\/p>\n<p>So, you need reps in the gym so to speak to absorb our DNA, and to garner proficiency and subsequently credibility. Keep in mind that it does us no good to hold you back- <strong>WCG CPAs &amp; Advisors<\/strong> will go as fast as your absorption rate will allow. As such, \u201cin-training\u201d simply means a temporary shift in expectations and workloads during this phase.<\/p>\n<p>We currently have several CPAs and EAs, and we require all accountants to either be on the CPA track or obtain the EA credential within 6-9 months depending on the calendar. The most annoyingly over-used two letters in our alphabet, sure, but at WCG we are embracing AI deliberately and broadly. Not as a marketing line, and not as a replacement for tax professionals. AI is a leverage tool, and the firms that figure out how to use it well over the next few years are going to look very different from the ones that did not.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the part that matters most. A lot of firms are reaching for AI to cut costs and shrink headcount. That is not us. WCG is using AI to make our advisors better at what they do, which lets us deliver more value to clients, protect the revenue we have, and grow into more sophisticated service offerings over time. The math is simple: a sharper advisor with the right tools can handle more complexity, give better advice, and serve clients in ways a less-equipped advisor cannot. That is the game we are playing.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where we are actively using AI today, and where we expect to use it more:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Research.<\/strong> Tax research that used to take an hour can now be scoped in a fraction of the time. We still verify, we still cite, we still think for ourselves, but the floor is faster.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Email softening and completeness.<\/strong> Tax accountants are not always natural writers. AI helps catch tone, fill in gaps, and make sure the client walks away with the full answer rather than a half one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tax return preparation and review.<\/strong> Pattern recognition, anomaly detection, and reasonableness checks where AI is faster than the human eye.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tax planning and comparison against the actual filed tax return.<\/strong> Closing the loop between what we planned and what actually happened, which is where a lot of firms drop the ball. &#8220;How did planning break?&#8221; since even a $20,000 delta in AGI can trigger so many cliffs, phaseouts, etc. but it is subtle. AI helps surface the details.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Client narratives.<\/strong> Tax returns, financial statements, and other deliverables that benefit from a clear written summary alongside the numbers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Selective automation.<\/strong> We are cautious here because bad automation is worse than no automation, but we are leaning in as the tools mature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the tooling side, we are still settling in. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are our current go-to platforms for general-purpose work but we are still &#8220;dating&#8221; before we say &#8220;I do (for now).&#8221; We are actively evaluating TaxGPT and similar tax-specific platforms, but cost matters: a firmwide rollout across 90 people is not a casual decision, especially when some of the specialty tools cost more than our tax preparation software. We are moving deliberately, not reactively.<\/p>\n<p>A few things worth saying directly. AI does not replace tax professionals at WCG. <strong>It makes good tax professionals more effective and exposes the gaps in mediocre ones.<\/strong> If you are someone who treats AI as a threat, we are probably not the right team. If you are someone who is genuinely curious about how to use these tools to do better work for clients, you will fit in fast. We expect every WCGer to develop an AI fluency over time, the same way we expected everyone to develop email fluency in 2005 and cloud fluency in 2015. Slide rules and calculators? Yup.<\/p>\n<p>We will keep adjusting as the landscape changes. This allows for more intimacy among the client manager or partner, the client and the people doing the work. It also allows for better workload management and balancing. Yes, we have an operations manager plus a supervisor to keep the trainings running on time from a macro \/ firm-wide level, but each Pod manages their world from a micro level. When you are on larger teams or in a pool of other accountants, you can lose touch with the client mission and you can also lose the sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p>Pods work well. There is also some healthy competition within each Pod and between Pods. Fun!<\/p>\n<p>Podmates, yes, that is a word, meet weekly via Teams to discuss problems, workload balancing, etc. The meetings are more sporadic during the summer. This is a great way to remain connected with your tribe within the firm. Coming out of COVID, the accounting industry was hit with a labor shortage that nobody saw coming and nobody knew how to fix. Experienced tax professionals were leaving the profession, new graduates were choosing other paths, and CPA firms across the country were quietly turning away work they should have been able to handle. WCG was no different. We needed capable hands, and we needed them fast.<\/p>\n<p>The standard play in the accounting industry at that moment was to outsource work to a third-party agency in India. The firm signs a contract, work flows out, work flows back, and a layer of agency overhead sits between the firm and the people actually doing the work. It is efficient on paper. We started there in 2022 because we had to. It was not how we wanted to build a team for the long haul.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26030 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/329664_2025_india_team_600-300x176-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/>Our path away from that has been deliberate. After our first two tax seasons with India team members in May 2024, we made a conscious choice to move away from &#8220;contractor mode&#8221; and treat our Ahmedabad colleagues as actual team members rather than transactional labor. That was a meaningful shift, and it worked. But we still did not have direct control over career pathing, compensation decisions, training depth, or the long-term professional development conversations that real careers require. After four tax seasons of partnership and a lot of reflection, we made the next move in May 2026: bringing the India team fully under the WCG umbrella as direct employees.<\/p>\n<p>Today our Ahmedabad team is 15 people strong, all WCG employees with WCG-issued compensation, WCG-led training, WCG-defined career paths, and a direct line into the same Pods, meetings, and standards as the rest of the firm. We are growing from there: two to three additional full-time roles, plus roughly 12 seasonal tax support roles each year to flex with the rhythm of tax season.<\/p>\n<p>A few things worth saying directly.<\/p>\n<p>We are not doing this to cut costs. We increased compensation meaningfully when we made the transition. Our India teammates are being paid as a real career, not as a labor arbitrage line item. The math works because the work they do is genuinely valuable, and we want them to stay, grow, and build something with us.<\/p>\n<p>We are not building a separate team in India. We are building one WCG team that happens to span continents. Same workflow software, same training, same standards, same expectations. Our Ahmedabad team participates in firm meetings, gets included on All-Hands calls (with reasonable time zone consideration), and shows up on the org chart the same way every other WCGer does.<\/p>\n<p>We are investing in careers, not seats. Our India team has access to the same career path opportunities, the same CA, CPA and EA credential support, and the same conversations about what they want their professional life to look like in five and ten years. Brilliant people who want to contribute to a mission want to be treated like teammates, not contractors. Some other tax and accounting firm, or perhaps a series of firms, received that benefit.<\/p>\n<p>A decade of hard work and dedication to the team\u2026 the WCG team\u2026 is what we need. Sure, your experience is valuable- no doubt. We get it, and the team needs it. We just need to find the proper context and insertion point. Heck, we\u2019ve had Tax Managers make Partner in under 4 years. Prospect calls make your skin crawl? No worries\u2026 there are a zillion ways to contribute to the WCG team.<\/p>\n<p>Having said all that, and using tax professional as an example, to be successful in any supervisory or managerial role at WCG, you must know how our sausage gets made. It is impossible to step into a world on day 1 and then on day 2 offer guidance or even respectful criticism to other people\u2019s work. You have expertise, and maybe even some credibility, but zero rapport. You might even be wrong in your review. Again, because you don\u2019t how WCG in particular makes the sausage. We need to protect you, as well as train, encourage and promote you.<\/p>\n<p>As such, and to ensure your success as a new tax professional (for example), we put you into tax return and tax plan preparation modes right away. Yes, you might have been signing tax returns at your previous firm. Yes, you might have been a team leader. This isn\u2019t a show-stopper, but we need to dig into your reasoning and also how you plan to remain connected to the team. Not everyone needs the social aspect woven into their professional life, but some do. If you are wanting to join our team in a remote capacity, it can be quite isolating and lonely if you are used to office parties, lunches, chatter in the hallway, etc. WCG is very aware of this has taken a bunch of steps to ensure our remote team remains connected (we also have a Social \/ Internal Team Support committee).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Big_Firm_Experience\"><\/span>Big Firm Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>WCG is a tiny little firm. We don\u2019t have locations scattered across the U.S. with all kinds of experience, depth, service lines (and the career paths that are offered with that), etc. We have had people from top 20 firms join our team, and it rarely leads to a good fit. Our engagements are smaller. We are generalists. We don\u2019t have billable hours. We need to have urgency. If you are wanting to make an impact with your team and adopt this firm as your own, well, that is a different story.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Low_Volume\"><\/span>Low Volume<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We touch a lot of tax returns and tax plans. What\u2019s a lot? 250-300 tax return \u201ctouches\u201d whether it\u2019s preparation or reviewing is not unusual (see Tax Team Career Path button above). So, if you come from a firm that doesn\u2019t have this high-volume low-touch high-urgency approach, it is tough to spool up to our way of life. This is the largest culprit when new WCGers struggle- just not used to the speed. We work hard, and play harder. We hate extensions and love our summers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Sidebar:<\/strong><\/span> For 2025 tax returns, we extended about 39%. For 2024 tax returns, it was 29%. For 2023 tax returns, it was 31%. We comfortable with 39%. However, we don&#8217;t want to see it go any higher since it disrupts summer plans and tax planning (which we do in the summer and not the Q4 fire drill at other firms). This increase is directly related to client sophistication increasing- all extensions are client requested. We do not force or request extensions.<\/p>\n<p>While these might not seem fair, this is simply a culmination of our experiences. We leave room for the unicorn\u2026 for the person who says, \u201chey, I\u2019m coming from a big brand-name firm and I know in my heart of hearts that I want a smaller and more intimate team that focuses primarily on compliance and small business advisory, and here are the 185 reasons I feel this way\u2026\u201d You don\u2019t have to tell us all 185 reasons\u2026 pick your top 3. You can work in the remaining 182 after you join the team.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heavy_Review_Experience\"><\/span>Heavy Review Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The tax team needs strong reviewers- it is our biggest limiting factor. However, to be a good reviewer you need to prepare tax returns to fully understand our procedures, tax positions, level of penny-perfect craziness, how WCG does business, etc. To step right into a reviewer role will never happen. Having said that, it does us absolutely no good to hold you back (as we&#8217;ve said several times here and there)- if you are crushing it, and you have a high give-a-damn factor, then we will accelerate your timeline. We need reviewers and client managers, but it is a process.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrapped_Too_Tight\"><\/span>Wrapped Too Tight<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you are someone who needs straight-lines, clean garages and balance sheets, we might not be the team for you. Half our business owners don\u2019t use formalized accounting, and half of the other half shouldn\u2019t get close to QuickBooks let alone use it. Properly prepared financial statements are a luxury with our client base. Will you see negative accounts receivable? Yes. Will you see negative cash? Yes. The question is, will you freak out about it? We get balance sheets from clients- no because of the client, but because we asked for them. Do we have to use them? No. Do we always prepare a Schedule L with our business tax returns? Yes. Always. There in lies the rub.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a returning one-person S Corp with a 1099-NEC for revenue, ending cash for the year, payroll details and a handful of totaled expenses, that tax return should take longer to clear diagnostics from the software than actual preparation. Get in, get out and move along because the next tax return might be a doozie. You must be able to give yourself permission to send a tax return to a client after spending only 20 minutes preparing it.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Poor_Written_Comms_and_Inbox_Management\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-107515\" src=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/002199_2630887695_email_300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Poor Written Comms and Inbox Management<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Right, wrong or indifferent, the accounting industry relies heavily on email communication. To be successful at WCG, you need to be strong in two related but distinct areas: writing well, and managing your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Writing well means quickly synthesizing what the client is asking and pounding out a clear, complete answer. It means knowing when to skip the email entirely and pick up the phone, because a 5-minute call often beats a 20-minute back-and-forth and adds a real touch point to the relationship. Yes, AI helps here. Tools like Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini can soften tone, fill in gaps, and help a tax accountant get to a polished response faster than they would on their own. But AI is a sharpening tool, not a substitute for actually being able to think and communicate. If your writing is fundamentally weak, AI will help, but it will not save you.<\/p>\n<p>Managing your inbox is the other half, and AI does not solve this one at all. AI also doesn&#8217;t help you get dressed in the morning either. Inbox management is about triage, prioritization, response time discipline, knowing when to batch and when to act, and knowing when an email thread has gone sideways and needs a phone call to reset. It is also about not letting your inbox run your day. WCG cut down on client email days to two per week (Mondays and Thursdays) precisely because the alternative is being held hostage by the inbox.<\/p>\n<p>A broader point worth saying. Email is a trap, and our industry and the taxpaying client base need to change. You do not email your doctor continuously, so why do you email me continuously? You want to tell your clients, &#8220;My inbox is not your Google search bar.&#8221; While we appreciate the confidence clients have extended, at times you wonder if it is simply the easy way out. &#8220;Mom, I can&#8217;t find my backpack.&#8221; Did you spend 3 seconds looking for it, or 15 minutes? Same energy.<\/p>\n<p>We are continuously analyzing email and the chore it has become, and experimenting with other things to cut down on the noise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Sidebar:<\/strong><\/span> All teams, including tax support and tax preparation, are encouraged to communicate with clients. In the beginning you will likely be on &#8220;email probation&#8221; where a senior team member reviews your messages to ensure a) you are not asking for something we already have or know, and b) the way it is being asked aligns with our &#8220;one voice&#8221; concept. Don&#8217;t get too hung up on this. We want everyone client-facing, getting that exposure, growing their skills, managing engagements, and all that jazz.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Not_a_Good_Fit\"><\/span>Not a Good Fit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>WCG is not the firm for everyone. Clients, team members, it doesn\u2019t matter. While we are continuously improving and providing a better service to the client and a better home for our team members, we must recognize that our way of doing business is not for everyone. If you are reading this and trying to make it work, then perhaps that is a sign. If you are reading this, and you can\u2019t get enough to the point of sharing the URL with your significant other and family members, then that is a good sign. Yeah, we laid it on a bit thick there. Whatever, we likely made you laugh just the same.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"info-box-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<div id=\"wd-6a1b084604f40\" class=\" wd-rs-6a1b084604f40 wd-info-box wd-wpb text-left box-icon-align-top box-style- color-scheme- wd-bg-none border-btm-title vc_custom_1780156903053\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"info-box-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"info-box-title title wd-font-weight-800 box-title-style-default font-primary wd-fontsize-m\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Work_Life_Balance\"><\/span>Work Life Balance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"info-box-inner reset-last-child\"><p>Ah, the most watered down phrase of 2022, 2023 and most of 2024. Yeah, 2025 too. Maybe 2026 will be different.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people look for new opportunities, and one of the primary reasons is \u201cwork life balance.\u201d At WCG (and stated here and there) we want to work hard, yet play harder. Yes, we are playful and funny, and generally have a good time. At the same time, we have a job to do. Our Tax and Accounting Services teams will easily work 55-60 hours a week during busy times, but then we drop down to 30 hours a week during slow times (like lovely summers in Colorado). Client Support and Payroll teams tend to work 40 hours a week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ab9157;\"><strong>Sidebar:<\/strong><\/span> As mentioned elsewhere, we do not have a strict &#8220;you must work xx hours.&#8221; However, and this a big however, in our experience, you will need to log 55-60 hours to be successful. If you can do a bunch of work in fewer hours, then good on you. We doubt it. But good on you just the same.<\/p>\n<p>For some people, there is a pleasure in a \u201cdecision-less\u201d period of working hard where all you do is eat, sleep and taxes, and then slide into summer with all sorts of free time to draw up ways to break up the week.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Time_Off\"><\/span>Time Off<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We also take a lot of time off as a firm after filing deadlines and around holidays. This is what we call \u201cmacro\u201d work life balance. For example, July 4 in 2025 landed on a Friday. We closed on Thursday and Friday with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday being \u201clite\u201d duty, and we called Lite RWA (a time where everyone works remotely and it is light duty, low brain power stuff). <strong>WCG provides over 23 days of firmwide closures.<\/strong> That&#8217;s more than a month! Sure, this includes 7 holidays, but another 16 days just because.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ab9157;\"><strong>Sidebar:<\/strong><\/span> We still must get our work done. So this time off stuff can be a small trap since emails and work still pile up, and our India team might not be off the same days you are off. You might have to put in some extra effort here and there to find these &#8220;chunky time off blocks&#8221; satisfying.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Flexibility\"><\/span>Flexibility<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Then there is \u201cmicro\u201d work life balance. WCG is compensating you for the work that you produce on an annual basis, and not in the manner in which you do it. If your circadian rhythm is more of a night owl, then you might work Noon to 9PM. Others like to break things up\u2026 get up early, get some work done, go to the gym for a couple of hours, get more work done, run some errands, cook dinner, and then get a little more work done. The micro work like balance is up to you. As Jason Watson says, \u201cgrades are a deodorant for bad behavior in school. Production is a deodorant for bad behavior at work.\u201d WCG takes care of the macro portion.<\/p>\n<p>What about time zones for our remote team? Given our comments just now, it makes sense that you don\u2019t have to align your work schedule to HQ\u2019s (which is mountain time). As stated elsewhere, our in-office team has tighter hours during the core hours- this is to preserve the nucleus of the firm and keep our team\u2019s DNA alive. However, our remote team does not have this requirement per se. We call you at 10:30AM on a Tuesday, and get your voicemail. Crickets on Teams. Do we care? Nope. Conversely\u2026 if we struggle to connect with you, clients are making comments, there are whispers in the virtual hallways, etc. then we might have a concern.<\/p>\n<p>See our Family Leave blurb below.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Work_Hard\"><\/span>Work Hard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our team has a can-do persona and is basically No BS. If your fuel is to work hard when it\u2019s needed and screw around when it\u2019s not, you\u2019ll fit right in. If not, that is OK, but WCG and our team might not be the best fit. What do we mean here?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23676\" src=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/000474_575726659_work_hard_300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>For 2026\u2019s tax season (preparing 2025 tax returns), we have prepared and filed about 3,700 tax returns which represents 61% of our annual tax prep goal. As you\u2019ve read elsewhere, we hate extensions, and love our summers (another T shirt by the way). New team members can have a hard time with this approach; if you come from a CPA firm where you extend a lot of tax returns, our way of life will either a) rock your world in a bad way or b) plug nicely into your personality.<\/p>\n<p>At the risk of belaboring the heck out of this, our team is small. You can\u2019t hide within a group of 90 or so tax and accounting professionals. Everyone needs to pull their weight as they say. Or\u2026 everyone needs to be rowing in the same boat in the same direction, and if you aren\u2019t, you\u2019ll stand out. Yeah, we just said two things that mean the same thing, literally. <strong>We can slow you down but we cannot make you go faster<\/strong>\u2014doing things quickly and efficiently must be a part of your DNA.<\/p>\n<p>Summers are a relaxed workload. Fewer hours, sure, but the intensity to the work is also much lower. May, June and July are tax planning months, with some light cleanup in November.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Annual_Hours_The_AWP\"><\/span>Annual Hours, The AWP<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All salaried positions must work 2,100 hours annually \/ 12-month trailing period. This is not a billable hours threshold, but rather hours working on WCG related activities. Holidays and other office closures count towards the 2,100 hours (e.g., Thanksgiving Day would contribute 8 hours towards the 2,100-hour requirement). PTO and other employee-requested leaves do not count towards the 2,100-hour requirement. As mentioned earlier, we have over 180 hours of firmwide closures that count towards the 2,100.<\/p>\n<p>The only time we dig into your hours, however, is when your goals are not being met. We establish your annual work program (the AWP), which is then reviewed, discussed and approved by you. The AWP includes-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Committee Obligations that you applied for (Training, Resolution, Marketing, Onboarding, etc.),<\/li>\n<li>production expectations (tax returns and plans for Tax, accounting engagements for Accounting Services, etc.) and<\/li>\n<li>your Career Development Plan (24 month goals, 5 year goals, how WCG can help, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This becomes your commitment to the team, and our commitment to you. Having said this, we might need to make tweaks depending on unforeseen circumstances or other limitations as they come up in real-time. What we don\u2019t do is reward good work with more work; if you can get your AWP accomplished in 1,900 hours instead of 2,100 well then good on you mate!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Full disclosure-<\/strong> We said it before, but it is worth repeating here. All new team members will track their time in 0.25 hour increments for the first several weeks. You can view this as micromanaging if you want. No argument here. However, the true purpose is to identify time traps and other systemic issues to help you succeed. Our way of doing business can be very different to even the most seasoned tax and accounting professional, and our only goal is to get you where you want to be as quickly as you want.<\/p>\n<p>While WCG does not track billable time, and while we don\u2019t care in the manner in which you get your work done but rather that it gets done, there is a direct causal relationship between hours worked and work accomplished. At the risk of repeating ourselves and you rolling your eyes, to be successful on the tax team, our nearly two-decade amount of experience strongly suggests that 55-60 hours a week is required from mid January to early April. Do some work more? Sure. Do some work less because they are efficient and employ their 5 year old to tally up charity donations? Yes. Should you have a baby just for the human calculator like in Hidden Figures? Perhaps.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WLB_Wrap-Up\"><\/span>WLB Wrap-Up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We work hard. We are stealing capital from you and your family for about 10 weeks, and injecting it into the team and the mission. However, outside of tax season, WCG returns that capital back to you, and you can re-deploy it with friends and family. If you have something to say, and you believe you are correct in your assessment, you should have no problem putting a signature to the words.<\/p>\n<p>Have we made mistakes as a CPA firm? Yes. Have we made interpersonal mistakes as managers and leaders? Yes. Do we continue to evolve, learn and grow? Huh? If you reach 80-85% of the demands within the team role, we can naturally augment the remaining portion with other team members. This is normal. You stink at 1031 like-kind exchanges. No worries, we have help for that. However, if you stop growing and developing at 60% or 70%, then we have a gap that might be too large to backfill. Another angle to this is someone who refuses to listen, learn and adopt new ways of doing things.<\/li>\n<li>You are not reaching your goals (the AWP) and there aren\u2019t mitigating circumstances. All we can do is compare you to your peers- if your peers are producing x, and you are producing y, then we have a concern. Do you need more training? Perhaps- people like to blame their shortcomings on training, but in reality it is something else. Do you have the right tools?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The way WCG operates is not for everyone. It is fantasy to think that every accountant is going to fit into all environments. The fact that you are reading these words right now suggests that it is not working out at your present firm, right? You are missing something. They can\u2019t find it or provide it. And here you are\u2026 does our team have what you are missing? Maybe, maybe not. Why do you like some people and not others in your personal life? Not everyone does, but some do. People meet their best friend at work. Maybe even a spouse. What does actively pursuing mean? NTS has been issued, study materials ordered, exams scheduled, blah blah blah. As Ben Franklin would say, let&#8217;s not confuse motion with action. Yes, friends called him Ben.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you be a partner at WCG without a CPA? Yes! Two partners were EAs before earning their CPAs deep into their career (like 40s and 50s deep). Can you be a partner as a non-tax team member without a credential? Yes! Why not? Since 2001, CPA firms do not need to only have CPAs running them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-107516\" src=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/002199_2625860611_partnership_300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" \/>Not everyone wants to be a partner. We get it, and that is super OK with us. We are a growing firm, and if being a partner is important to you and you have a lot to contribute to the team as a leader in that capacity, then we can take you there. Quickly.<\/p>\n<p>We also encourage all non-tax team WCGers to obtain their Enrolled Agent credential. It shows commitment to your profession and the industry, and it lets you talk to the IRS and other tax agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, WCG has a reimbursement program available including bonuses for both the CA, CPA and EA. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/handbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associate Handbook<\/a> outlines the program- at times there is some customization because some people join our team with 3 exams passed, or something similar. As such, we &#8220;negotiate&#8221; a fair reimbursement and bonus structure.<\/p>\n<p>Super finally&#8230; no one, ever, in the history of the accounting industry woke up and said, &#8220;Crap! I&#8217;m still a CPA. Ugh!&#8221; And no one, ever, jumped into the shower and said, &#8220;Gotta scrub this CPA off me.&#8221; EA or CPA or CA&#8230; get it done, be proud and don&#8217;t look back. Ever.<\/p>\n<p>Moving on to signature stuff- WCG is trying to buck a lot of typical accounting industry trends or standards. One of them is signing tax returns. Of course, our partners sign tax returns, but our experienced tax supervisors and tax managers also sign tax returns. We have a signer probation program including partner review triggers, but overall we are all about nextgen leader development, and on some levels, evolution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<style><\/style>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"info-box-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<div id=\"wd-68176eacc6f64\" class=\" wd-rs-68176eacc6f64 wd-info-box wd-wpb text-left box-icon-align-top box-style- color-scheme- wd-bg-none border-btm-title \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"info-box-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"info-box-title title wd-font-weight-800 box-title-style-default font-primary wd-fontsize-m\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mergers_and_Acquisitions\"><\/span>Mergers and Acquisitions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"info-box-inner reset-last-child\"><p>The accounting industry has seen a ton of mergers and acquisitions. On a cynical level, some argue that larger firms are starving for new partners to help fund the exiting partners and their deferred compensation packages. Some argue that it is not a Ponzi scheme per se but rather a land grab, or more aptly said, a talent grab. Private equity has it\u2019s motivations as well.<\/p>\n<p>WCG is not interested in being acquired. Period. Full-stop. Sure, there is a theoretical amount of money to make someone do anything, but no one is writing that check for our little boutique firm in Colorado. Moreover, our revenue is not unique- we are small business generalists who do a lot of compliance work. Not really that sexy.<\/p>\n<p>We have seriously gone down the acquisition path on three occasions. One was a regional firm in Colorado who was similar to WCG. One was a top 20 firm. One was private equity. The regional firm was okay, but they had done some recent acquisitions and the dust hadn\u2019t settled yet. We said no thanks. The top 20 firm was also okay, but our team would have been swallowed up and our identity would be lost. Again, we said no thanks. The private equity was pure nonsense since they wanted an ROI that was simply unobtainable. They said no thanks.<\/p>\n<p>These iterations re-entrenched WCG\u2019s partners, and we\u2019ve made a commitment to transfer ownership and control from within. We used to entertain conversations regarding merger or acquisitions, but today we don\u2019t even answer the door. \u201cGo sell crazy someplace else. Here is quick summary of our tech deck and committees.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tech_Deck\"><\/span>Tech Deck<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, we are tech-forward but we also understand that changes are disruptive. At times it is better the devil you know than some bad game of whack a mole.<\/p>\n<p>UltraTax by Thompson Reuters is our tax software. We also use Fixed Assets CS, but that is about it. Accounting CS, Practice CS and File Cabinet are clunky and outdated. We\u2019ve entertained other tax software, but at the end of the day, tax is tax, software is software (we are experiencing some limitations with 60+ rental activities, 60+ K-1s, and \/ or 10+ states).<\/p>\n<p>SurePrep which was recently purchased by Thompson Reuters does our electronic tax binders. It also scans a 144-page brokerage statement and finds that pesky foreign dividends breakout on page 87, and plops all this into the tax return. Oh, and it does just fine with all the other typical tax documents too. OCR, or optical character recognition, is one thing, but SurePrep actually deconstructs the PDF directly looking for the data (ie, fewer typos).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23680\" src=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/000474_2196587033_internal_support_300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>CanopyTax or simply Canopy is our workflow software. We chose them for two big reasons- it captures all email to and from the client, so if Bob emails the client and Suzie emails the client, Naomio can also see what was communicated before she does or asks for something silly. The other thing Canopy does is directly pull transcripts from the IRS. Yeah, that\u2019s pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p>ShareFile handles all our client portals and document management including deliverables to the client.<\/p>\n<p>Jotform is our provider for secure online forms.<\/p>\n<p>ADP was our payroll processor. We used to process payroll for over 900 businesses, but have transitioned all this back to ADP with our <a href=\"https:\/\/wcginc.com\/business-services\/reset-with-intention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reset With Intention initiative<\/a>. ADP remains our payroll partner with our Payroll Quick Launch services for business startups.<\/p>\n<p>QuickBooks Online and Xero, and REIHub (for our rental propery owners) are the only accounting platforms that we support. No, we will not use Logmein or some other nonsense screenshare so you can continue to use Desktop from 2012. Yuck! We also don\u2019t accept QB data files for tax return preparation. Here we go, and some of this might be repetitive-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flexible hours (core hours are 8:30AM to 4:30PM). Are you a midnight owl or an early bird? During tax season, local team members must be in the office 6 hours during core hours. So, you could work 7-3 or 10-6, or whatever suits you as long as you get your 6 in. Off-season, the 6 becomes a 5.<\/li>\n<li>Remote team members have way more flexibility. We create an annual work plan, break it down by season, and further break that down into bite-size goals. Achieve your goals and we don\u2019t necessarily care in the manner in which you get it done, why should we, right? Butts in seats is such an old fashioned and silly way of valuing team contribution.<\/li>\n<li>Unlimited paid time off for salaried positions (hourly positions earn up to 16 days annually based on 2,080 hours).<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid work schedule for our local team where we all remote or in-office together, as a team.<\/li>\n<li>Reduced staffing on Fridays May thru August, October and November depending on the team (tax is off, accounting and payroll is modified, client support rotates).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Credential_Matters\"><\/span>Credential Matters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned elsewhere, all new tax team members must either be credentialed (CPA, CA or EA), be on the CPA track or pass the Enrolled Agent exams within 6 months of joining the team. We offer expense reimbursements and bonus incentives for obtaining your CPA, CA or EA credential. Once credentialed, we have a firmwide account with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sequoiacpe.com\/cpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sequoia CPE<\/a>\u00a0for earning education credits including ethics. Sequoia is nice because it is test-based, and you knock out a bunch of hours in short order.<\/p>\n<p>WCG also reimburses you for your annual state CPA licensure fees for one state. However, we don\u2019t reimburse for individual AICPA membership and related organizations.
